COMMODORES COLUMN                                              Commodore  -  Tim O’Keefe

Ahoy Shipmates,

The cool September nights are back, the kids are in school, and the 2008 season is coming to an end.  That was one of the quickest summers I can remember.  I would like to thank you for keeping the club clean and running on all cylinders this 2008 season.  The  hoist is operational but should not be boomed up and down when sustaining weight such as a dock or boat.  This is very important.  The dock lights are all working, the paving stones are beautiful, and the showers/lockers are almost completed.  We had a pipe fixed in the basement bar area so please let me know if you see anything leaking down there.  We have an extra large amount of bar bills outstanding, so please address this at the September meeting.

The Auxiliary stores hot dogs in the kitchen freezer during the summer months to be used for the summer lunches.   During the month of August these hot dogs went missing.  The food in the refrigerator and freezer belongs to the Auxiliary.  If you put food in there it should have your name on it.  At no time is any member to take the hot dogs or any other food without the permission of Cathy Romano.  This problem has caused great distress to the weekend lunch program throughout the month of August.

The bar is also reporting a large quantity of pilferage has become a financial problem.  If the members can't stop it, the prices will go up and soon.

Thanks to the Auxiliary and Cathy Romano, Mike Krol on the snapper derby, and the leadership of our Entertainment Committee Chairman, Kevin McAlese the Labor Day festivities were more fun than whip cream on a Commodore.  I got creamed at the Carnival, but that's another story.  Thanks to all who helped.

Those of you coming to the Spirit Rider Regatta, I thank you for your support of this foundation.  You help send a kid to college that could not go if it wasn't for the generosity of all of you.  It's still not too late to attend.  You can call Noreen Costello at 662-0485.

Last I would like to offer our condolences to all the families who lost a loved one this summer.  This was a very hard summer for HPYC members.  Our prayers go out to you.

Don't forget to boat more and boat more often.

                                                                                                              Tim O'Keefe

At the August meeting there was no new business or unfinished business conducted, however the topic of outside vendors working on members’ boats was discussed.  Just remember a lot of the problems would be solved if a member was present when their boats were being worked on as the rules state.

At the Executive Board Meeting, the Board discussed losses at the bar due to members not paying for their drinks.  Many suggestions were discussed.  If we want to keep the privilege of all members having access to the bar please pay for all your drinks.

The budget was discussed including various methods of paying for major expenditures such as dock replacement.  The Board approved the proposed budget.

The Club will be in contact with Nassau County to discuss problems caused by the sewer line that runs under the North Parking Lot.

Thanks all for now.

See you at the Club!

                                    Ken

Dear Shipmates:

The summer is starting to wind down and so is the slip bidding. Slip A-12 was awarded to John O Sullivan. Slip G-3 10 ft 6 in beam is now up for bid. Slips C-1 and D-1 have 9 ft 8 in beams. slips C-2, C-3,D-2 D-3 all have 11 ft beams.

At the Sept. meeting the new budget will be introduced to the membership.  It is very important to make the meeting so everyone knows what's going on and what is being done with our money.

Ladies and Gentleman if you have any pictures from any of the trips you went on with the club or if you have any pictures from any events the club has sponsored such as the beach party, fourth of July, Commodores Dinner, you get the idea right, please send them to Cathy Romano so she will be able to update our web site.

I don't know when the last time you have been on it but there are pictures from 2004 on it we need to step it up.

We also have to have every ones registrations for their boats.  If you haven't turned one in you will not be able to keep your boat on the club grounds for the winter no if ands or buts!!!!

Labor day is slowly creeping up on us but there is still plenty of fun going at the club and the fishing starts to get better too. So I will see you all at the club for a whole lotta fun.

See you all around the Club

                                                Larry

  AUXILIARY

Hope everyone had a good Labor Day. Our next meeting will be Wednesday, September 17 at 8 PM. If you have any ideas you want to discuss, please come down and join us.

The Halloween Party is scheduled for Oct 26th. We don’t have any volunteers as of yet to help with this party. If you have children and are planning on attending, please let me know early, preferably by Oct 12, so we can determine if it’s worth still having this party. This party is great fun for the kids, but if we don’t get the attendance and nobody wants to help, we really don’t have much choose.

Start planning for the Goods and Services Auction in November. If you have anything to donate or a service (legal, of course), please donate early and often.

Hope to see you on September 17th!

                        Cathy Romano - Chairlady

FLEET CAPTAIN                 Bob Steele

Fellow Cruisers,
Wow what a turn out!!!

I’m talking about our Club Cruise to Atlantique, Fire Island (July 28-31) and the Babylon Yacht Club (Aug. 1-3).

We had thirteen (13) vessels from our Club participate, and boy did we have a great time.  It was nice to see first time cruisers and old cruise veterans all enjoying the beautiful weather and the company of other Club Members. Vinnie and Cathy Romano came by ferry to join in on the fun.

If you weren't there, make plans to be on this cruise next year.

As I write this report, our members are on our next cruise to Sailor's Haven, Fire Island.
